Writing Class & Critical Reading Classes

We offer a Writing Skills Class in winter 2017/2018 and a Critical Reading Skills Class in spring 2018. Each class limits the maximum number of students to 12.

  • For Whom: middle school students currently in grades 6th ~ 8th
  • When: 7:30 - 8:30 PM Thursday night, Nov 30th 2017- June 7th, 2018
  • Where: Noble and Greenough School, Shattuck Room 112
  • Address: 10 Campus Drive, Dedham MA
  • Price: $600 for one of the two classes (10 sessions for each class) or $1100 for both reading and writing sessions.

If the student is accepted to the Academic Enrichment Program, a non-refundable enrollment fee of $100 will be due to secure the spot. Please check your email for payment method.

About the Teacher

  • Mrs. Snyder has taught English in grades six through twelve in public and private schools for the last thirty-seven years. She has been teaching both middle-school and high-school English at Nobles for the last twenty-two years.
  • She won 2014 Vernon L. Greene Award for Teaching Excellence.
  • She obtained her EdM. from Harvard University in 1985.
  • She is also a published author for The Human Contract and in Bloodroot Literary Magazine, Comstock Review, Broken Bridge Review, Zeugma Magazine, Senior Times, Mothering Magazine, West Trade Review, The Main Street Rag, Mothers Always Write among other magazines and anthologies.

About the Writing Class

  • These ten sessions of writing practice are designed to help students gain confidence and prowess in their writing.
  • Each week new skills like description (concrete details, metaphors, similes), sentence variation, conciseness, dialogue, word choice, verb strength, transition, point of view, poetic devices, and others will be introduced and practiced.
  • There will be some writing required outside of class to increase and reveal improvement.
  • Class dates: 11/30/2017, 12/7, 12/14, 1/11, 1/18, 1/25, 2/1, 2/22, 3/1, 3/8

About the Critical Reading Class

  • In these ten sessions we will read a novel actively.
  • Each class will focus on close reading, vocabulary development through the text, discussion, and writing (dissecting passages to unpack theme, character change, archetypes, symbols, and literary devices).
  • Some writing and reading will be required outside of the classes.
  • Class dates: 4/5/2018, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31, 6/7
